During the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) annual International Roadcheck event, more than 59,000 commercial motor vehicle inspections were conducted in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. During the inspections, 12,456 commercial motor vehicles and 3,714 drivers were placed out of service and prohibited to operate for a period of time, or until the violation was corrected.

Each year, the CVSA brings attention to a category of violations during the 72-hour inspection spree to increase awareness of certain aspects of a routine roadside inspection. This year’s focus was on wheel end components. Out of the top 10 vehicle out-of-service violations, tires ranked second and wheels came in seventh. Combined, wheel end violations accounted for 22.8% of all out-of-service vehicle violations throughout North America.

Here is a breakdown of the U.S. inspection results:

TOP 5 VEHICLE OOS VIOLATIONS

  • Brake Systems (24%)
  • Tires (19%)
  • Defective Service Brakes (13%)
  • Lights (13%)
  • Cargo Securement (10%)

TOP 5 DRIVER OOS VIOLATIONS

  • False Logs (45%)
  • Wrong Class License (25%)
  • Suspended License (6%)
  • No Medical Card (5%)
  • Other (5%)

International Roadcheck is the commercial motor vehicle law enforcement community’s effort to reduce commercial motor vehicle-involved crashes by inspecting, identifying and removing unsafe commercial motor vehicles and drivers from roadways. The CVSA has conducted more than 1.8 million roadside inspections since its inception in 1988.
