Construction work is everywhere, from road construction to new building construction and everything in between. Paying attention and staying safe while traveling through work zones is crucial for both you, the crews performing these essential jobs and other motorists.

According to Work Zone Safety, there were 244 commercial motor vehicle-involved crash fatalities in work zones in 2020. Stay safe while traveling through work zones with these tips:

Research Your Route
Before heading out on the road, research your route. Avoid work zones and use any detours that are available when possible.

Stay Alert
Keep your eyes on the road. This is exceptionally important in work zones. Be aware of all signs throughout the work zones that indicate reduced speeds, lane changes and other important information. Avoid distractions such as your cell phone, eating, drinking, the radio, GPS and conversing with other passengers.

Reduce Your Speed
Make sure to slow down when entering a work zone and be mindful of road workers. Lane closures, traffic pattern shifts and lowered speed limits are all common in these areas.

Merge into the Open Lane
When approaching lane closures, move into the open lane as soon as possible. Pay close attention to vehicles around you that could be in your blind spot.

Maintain a Safe Distance
Rear-end crashes are common in work zones. It’s important to keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you at all times.

It’s critical that all road users approach work zones with caution and do their part to keep the road safe for everyone. For more resources, visit workzonesafety.org.
